What does the Brexit secretary’s resignation mean for Brexit plans?

This morning Brexit secretary Dominic Raab resigned from Theresa May’s cabinet. He cited the reason as his disagreement with the proposed Brexit deal.

“First I believe that the regulatory regime proposed for Northern Ireland presents a very real threat to the integrity of the United Kingdom.”

“Second, I cannot support an indefinite backstop arrangement, where the EU holds a veto over our ability to exit.”

As soon as he resigned, the GBP plummeted, and spectators noted that Theresa May’s authority is wavering at the worst possible moment. This will bolster the Brexiteers arguments and courage, giving their criticisms more weight.

Worryingly, the Health Secretary has reportedly warned that vital medicines could be disrupted in a No-Deal scenario, meaning lives would be lost in this situation, which is made more likely by the growing strength of the Brexiteers.

From this morning four Ministers have resigned so far, meaning the situation may yet get worse. There are talks that Theresa May could be forced to resign herself. This could not come at a worse time, when the country needs stability, and could completely scupper current Brexit plans.
