The next generation of engineers

The world has seen some major technological advancements over the last two hundred years, and the engineering sector has been the most powerful cog in that progression. One of the standout engineers whose legacy is still influencing the world today is Nikola Tesla, whose contributions to the design of modern alternating current have been further developed to power the electric cars.

With role models of that calibre available, you would expect the engineering sector to be brimming with talent. However, this is not the case, and the sector is facing a skills shortage. Statistics show that over 2 million scientists, engineers and technicians will be needed in the UK by 2022, which ultimately means a new solution is needed to bridge the gap. So the question that has stuck in my mind is, where are those engineers coming from?

To begin a career in the engineering sector, students who are leaving school can follow the traditional route of graduating from university with a degree, or alternatively, they can study a technical award which offers specific experience in a field of engineering. Another educational route for them to follow is achieving an apprenticeship.

So what can those students expect after gaining their qualifications?

Engineers can work in any sector, with computers where they could design the next super computer, in sport creating new equipment, in film implementing special effects, or in health care manufacturing lifesaving drugs and prosthetic limbs.

They also respond to the world’s most challenging situations including natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions and tsunamis, cyber security threats and developing renewable energy sources to preserve the planet.

Ultimately, the engineering sector is still growing and will continue to grow as technology advances. Engineers will be needed to help aid that growth and the advantageous reward of going down in history for designing a flying car, discovering a new galaxy or creating new ways of powering the planet, could be the major factor in attracting people to the sector and filling the vacancies.
