What makes a leader?

This week I dedicated time to analyse leadership and success, what can we learn from the champions amongst us, and what is restricting the rest of us from achieving great things. From time taken with appointed Mentors and multiple hours of motivational podcasts, there seems to be a running theme – life has no limitations, except the one’s we make.

From conducting case studies on the psychometric test results of successful leaders, it seems the empathetic and heart-led influencers come bottom of the pile. Does this mean success comes with selfishness, or a streak developed through a journey filled with challenge and resilience? The ability to handle consistent stress and criticism is a necessary trait of a leader. However,

the most influential leaders are both hungry and humble.

The real challenge of growth comes when you get knocked down – how you handle it – that is where the growth takes place. Are you going through it, or growing through it?

Continued hard work does not promise immediate success, however, it does promise definite and absolute success. Organisational drive is key, the desire to seek responsibility and take accountability. The unbreakable urge for progression and passion for ownership; understanding the importance of YOUR time and YOUR journey. History dictates that those of us who leave an impression on the world, take control of their own success.

There is no perfect model for a leader, no prototype we can clone; however, there are commonalities which develop in those who push above the average. Those who go the extra mile and put in the extra hours.

Each person is driven by their own individual ‘why’, which shapes their version of complete success. Find YOUR why – as long as your why is stronger than the opposing force holding you down you will continually move forward, and continue to succeed.

As the euphoria of the ‘new year change’ fades into the beginning of spring, it is time to make the choice – will you be the hunter, or just another number in the herd? You have the unique power and control that no one else on this planet holds – the power to determine your success.
