#MeToo Movement Hits Google

Employees of one of the largest tech companies in the world have been protesting against sexual harassment in the workplace this week. Due to a string of events, employees of Google have protested against the company’s response to the crisis.

This is prompted by the recent departure of Senior VP Andy Rubin, who was accused of sexual harassment, but was handed a $90 million exit package. Also highlighted was the ingrained culture of non-disclosure at Google, which has allegedly held back some of the victims of sexual harassment back from reporting it.

In addition to the above, there has been mention of pay inequality based on gender, meaning women are paid less than men in comparable jobs. This has left the google senior management with quite a complicated crisis, as it appears a huge cultural overhaul is well needed.

CEO Sundar Pichai stated he agreed with the protests, and stated he was ‘taking note of the concrete steps’ presented by employees. Time will tell what changes will be implemented, but this crisis highlights the need for organisational transparency, especially in the digital age.
