Our client has an £8 Billion turnover, they employ 33,000 staff, they are operational in 22 countries around the globe and they are independently owned. They are seeking an ambitious and knowledgeable recent Graduate Design Engineer to join their organisation based in Newton Aycliffe. Although you must be a recent Design Engineering Graduate, the organisation will provide both access to world class training and a mentor support structure within the business in order to hone your skills and accelerate your career. The specification below is for a fully-fledged R&D Design Engineer and highlights the true scope of the role. This is where your journey with our global client will take you. To be considered for this role at this stage, you must be super smart at Maths, undertaken a University Degree focusing on Mechanical Engineering and have a basic understanding of design analysis. You will also have a good understanding of materials & mechanics. If you have knowledge of simulation, this will be an absolute bonus!

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING IN YOUR ROLE?

  • Work concurrently with R&D Design Engineers to develop appropriate structural solutions to meet performance requirements
  • Carrying out FEA work as directed by the Analysis Supervisor & Senior Design Analysts
  • Interface with customers (OEM's) and present information on project deliverables
  • Produce clear reports detailing the performance of the completed design
  • Maintain clear and concise communication with the relevant project team throughout the lifecycle of a project
  • Carry out and /or review the assigned calculations and simulations, making the necessary iterations, in order to ensure their validity, and propose potential improvements.
  • Drive process improvements and where applicable implement new techniques and new technologies
  • Ensure that all FEA work carried-out to department standards
  • Generate concept designs, identifying problems and solutions for Gestamp chassis components.
  • Manage and maintain all project related documentation and ensure traceability is maintained
  • Ensure departmental project compliance with IATF16949:2016
  • To continue to grow personal finite element analysis knowledge and skill, to eventually be considered an expert in the field.
  • Participate / lead in Benchmarking activities and / or Innovation projects carried out in the center, proposing new activities and projects.
  • Carry out correlation between simulations and physical tests, in order to validate and verify the accuracy of simulation and identify then adopt required improvement.

WHAT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION?

  • An excellent understanding of structural mechanics and materials.
  • To have experience in finite element analysis software such as Altair Hypermesh, Abaqus, MSC nastran or ANSA.
  • To have experience and skill in scripting using either SciLab, Python or TcL.
  • To have a proven ability to learn new skills, software and working approaches.
  • The ability to manage and control data in a thorough and detailed manner.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and act upon results from design analysis to optimise component designs.
  • To understand the limitations and the capabilities of current finite element analysis approaches.
  • To have a general understanding of Vehicle Dynamics and an interest in the automotive sector.

WHAT ARE THE FINER DETAILS OF YOUR ROLE?

This is a permanent role from day one and it comprises of a 38-hour week. The organisation provides flexible working and runs with core hours between 9am – 3pm with an early finish on a Friday (1pm).

WHAT SALARY PACKAGE YOU WILL BE RECEIVING

The Graduate Design Engineer role starts with a salary of circa £28K per annum. With experience and completion of progression pathways the role will transition through the pay grades.
