Westray support County Durham School

Our Commercial Division Manager, Paul Thompson, visited a County Durham school in October to interview Year 11 pupils who would be moving into work or further education next year.

The North East Enterprise Agency invited us to Consett Community Sports College alongside other local businesses in order to support the pupils in taking the next step in their career.

Upon arrival, Paul was invited to take part in the morning assembly – which brought back a lot of memories for our man. “I remember going to assembly at school, and having to sit on the cold floor whilst the head teacher lectured us. It was a blast from the past!”

Following the assembly, it was time to sit down with the pupils and put them through a mock interview. Each interview was filmed and notes were taken so that Paul could give each pupil feedback on their interview technique, including methods they could utilise to improve their modus operandi. Paul was very impressed with the talent and enthusiasm at the school. “I met a real mix of young people, each with different ambitions. Some wanted to go to university, whilst others were keen to get on the employment ladder in industries such as performing arts, marine biology and even game keeping! It’s wonderful to see that students are proactive in planning for their future instead of waiting for a career to fall on their lap.” Paul was also very impressed with the environment that the school provide for the pupils. “As soon as I walked through the gates, you couldn’t help but notice the wonderful atmosphere throughout the school. It is a fantastic school with really passionate staff.”

Given that our roots are here in the North East, we are happy to give our time to the local community with initiatives like this. If you would like to utilise our skills and knowledge, please give us a call on 0191 415 1100 or email Washington@westray.co.uk.
